Position Description

The Complex Care Assistant (CCA) is a Massachusetts specific position, in which a Home Health Aide is qualified to perform certain health-related services (enhanced care) to a Complex Care Member as described at 130 CMR 438.415(C). The CCA is a member of the home care team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities of the Complex Care Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Enteral G-Tube/J-Tube Feeds
    • Skin Care including application of OTC products or routine enteral feed tube care
    • Oxygen therapy
    • Oral (dental) suction to remove superficial oral secretions
    • Ostomy and catheter care
    • Modified meal preparation
    • Equipment management and maintenance and paperwork
    • Braces, splints, and/or pressure stockings
    • Transportation to medical providers/pharmacy
    • Incidental services
  • Plans and prepares nutritious meals that does not require nurse oversight to administer; including modification of consistency as directed
  • Assists in feeding the patient, if necessary
  • Takes and records oral, rectal and axillary temperatures, pulse, respiration and blood pressure when ordered
  • Meets safety needs of patients and using equipment safely and properly (Enteral G-tube/J-tube, ostomy bag, catheter etc.)
  • Documents services provided in accordance to the plan of care in an accurate and timely manner (i.e. in real time as services are provided)
  • Observes and reports any significant changes in the patient's condition or incidents to the assigned nurse as soon as possible after any necessary interventions are completed
  • Adheres to Maxim's documentation and care procedures and standards of personal and professional conduct
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must Meet Personal Care Services Training and Competency Requirements
    • Must meet the training and competency evaluation program standards for home health aides established at 42 CFR 484.80. This includes:
      • Completing a training and competency evaluation (75-hour training); or Completing a competency evaluation; or
      • Being a C.N.A.
  • Must meet the Enhanced Care Services, Training and Competency Requirements
    • The assistant must demonstrate proficiency in safely providing the enhanced care services specific to the complex care member’s needs. An Assistant may meet the competency training and comprehension requirements for enhanced care services by:
      • Completing at least 10 hours of direct training on the enhanced care serviceservices specific to the member they will serve and proficiency in each care task has been evaluated and documented; or
      • Completing an evaluation that demonstrates and documents the assistant’s proficiency in the enhanced care services specific to the member they will serve
  • Must possess and maintain current CPR certification in accordance with state regulation
  • Successful completion of Maxim examinations with a score of 80% or greater
  • PPD or chest x-ray, Physical and MMR (if applicable)
  • Ability to read and follow written E n g l i s h instructions and document care given
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language required
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
